Hard work and establishing a good infrastructure are also key to success, says
Red Beach resident Mr Grooten. "You've got to be prepared to stick your neck out." From its small beginnings, Dad's Pies now occupies a 3000-square-metre site in Silverdale where the pies are made and sold wholesale to customers nationwide and soon overseas. "We have an agreement to supply pies to 600 pubs in England and we've also had interest from the United States, China, Korea and Japan." Dad's Pies also has a small retail shop on the Silverdale site. Becoming a well-known brand is next on the list for Mr Grooten. "We're not a very big brand because most of our pies are sold unbranded," he says. Originally from Holland, Eddie came to New Zealand in the early 1980s and used his saving to buy the shop at Red Beach. He describes the business as an adventure, one which he is still on and which he hopes one day to pass on to one of his children. As well as achieving financial success, the company has taken on 13 baking apprentices and supports a large number of organisations, including Westpac helicopter and many local schools and sports clubs. Eddie is one of 16 finalists nationwide who will compete for the Ernst and Young award, which is judged on strategic direction, financial achievements, company history and a personal biography. "It's about finding standout business people who have the special qualities and talents necessary to build sustainable, successful businesses," says award director Carol Campbell.
